Mertle Mae Tucker supports herself, her dad, a canary and a blind cat working as a truck dispatcher. Dad was a Yankee benchwarmer during the 1955 World Series, who retired after one season rather than be traded to Cleveland. After a head injury, he awoke convinced that the Series was about to begin, and has stayed right there ever since. His room is the dugout, the living room the stands at Yankee Stadium. Mrs. Sanchez upstairs is George Weiss, owner of the Yankees, and Mertle Mae is the team manager, Casey Stengel. Mertle Mae, tired of her dead-end life, takes a course at night school where she meets Frank, a successful young executive. Tutoring turns to something more, but exactly what, neither Frank nor Mertle Mae is certain. And is Frank prepared to join the 1955 Yankees for love of Mertle Mae?
