The Fourposter

 by Jan DeHartog

First presented by The Playwrights Company at the Barrymore Theatre, October 24, 1951.

Synopsis:

This classic American theatre piece has charmed audiences for decades. From honeymoon to golden gears, a marriage is lovingly chronicled with the four poster bed central to the history. Early exuberant passion, joy and anxiety of parenthood, uncertain middle years, reconciliation and reaffirmation are all tenderly and humorously recounted. Audience members will recognize themselves or someone they know in each intuitive vignette.

The story is set at the turn of the 20th century, with scenes in 1890, 1891, 1901, 1908, 1913, and 1925.

Charlie Wilson was originally intending to direct this show. Unfortunately, the actor playing Micahel was injured shortly into rehearsals, and after a fruitless search for a replacement, Charlie took the role himself, leaving only three weeks of rehearsal before opening night. Sandy Wilson stepped up to take over the directing duties. They have both done excellent jobs, as if anyone would expect otherwise!
