Director's Notes:
Q: What did you like about this
play to make you want to direct it?
Inia Jean: Like so many of Neil
Simon works, I know these people. They are my friends and even
though sometimes they do things that make me crazy, I love them.
This play presents a comic view of how friendships endure such
minor irritations and some major conflicts. Each character is
someone you know -- a friend, a relative, the person who looks
back at you in the mirror each morning. You may not be able to
pin point exactly who it was in your past, but you are reminded
of someone, and you nod or laugh in recognition. That familiarity
brings a feeling of community to the audience.
Q: Is there anything especially
challenging in this production?
Inia Jean: The challenge of this
production will be in the casting. Neil Simons writing
is like a musical score. It has a cadence that must be honored.
The actors have to be true to the written word; aware of pace
while capable of holding for laughs; and willing to bring their
own special talents to flesh out the character in a personal
way.
Q: Do you have any comments
on the show itself?
Inia Jean: Given the long run of
the mens version of the play, the movie, and television
series, some may view this as a vehicle for two leads. I consider
it an ensemble piece. What contributes to the truth of the play
is the sincere friendships that withstand verbal jabs, idiosyncratic
behaviors, dissimilar interests, and disparate lifestyles of
all the people involved.
It is an uproariously funny play and we are definitely going
to have fun!
